Embark on a culinary journey with Udupi Masala Chitranna, a cherished South Indian delicacy that brings together the rich flavors of coconut, mustard, and tamarind. Unlike typical lemon rice, this version uses a freshly ground masala of coconut, mustard seeds, and dried red chilies blended to a coarse consistency—no water added—infusing the rice with a deep, aromatic character. Traditionally served as part of a festive feast and always granted its own spot on the banana leaf, this dish shines as both a flavorful side and a satisfying lunchbox treat.
The essence of this Udupi specialty lies in using freshly grated coconut and moist cooked rice, ensuring every bite is delectably fragrant and soft. Once the tempered spices, peanuts, and curry leaves marry with the tanginess of tamarind and gentle sweetness of jaggery, the masala is added, followed by a generous tumble of rice. Serve hot, and let the vibrant flavors speak for themselves—perfect for celebrations or simply elevating your everyday meals.
